Why are Liberals Bad?

Do you remember when being a Liberal was a good thing? It’s getting harder and harder to remember a time when a person could stand up and take pride at being labeled a liberal. Today, if you pay attention to propaganda (and really, who can get away from it), liberals are to be blamed for everything that is wrong with the world. Somehow liberals have come to be almost a political party of their own—except that many people who do not know better think that being a liberal is the same thing as being a Democrat.

Liberals are not what is wrong with the world. On the contrary, most of the things we love and now take for granted were achieved by liberals. Slavery was ended by liberals. The internet was started by liberals. The United States of America was founded by liberals.

Really, when you think about it, liberals are the people who stand up to the status quo and try to make a change. They are the people who think outside of the box and then work together to make things happen. The truth is that both Republicans and Democrats can be liberals. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican and a liberal. Why is being a liberal suddenly so bad?

If you were to look up liberal in the dictionary you would find a list of definitions that anybody would be proud to have describe them including being free of prejudice or bigotry and having an open mind.

The truth is that liberalism itself is not bad—not if you take the time to look at it from an intellectual “what does this word actually mean” standpoint.

The great thing about liberals is that they are free from a single indoctrinated mindset. Today’s liberals could very well be tomorrow’s conservatives. Time has switched the two before. Remember, there was a time when the Republican party was the party that clamored for change and hope!

So how does the “evil liberals” problem get solved? I propose that liberals stop taking the bait. Instead of taking the time to defend liberalism, simply keep on being liberal. As you work to improve the world for everyone, people will stop telling you that you are ineffectual. Eventually spreading hatred about liberals is going to be vilified and then those who insist that liberalism is a bad thing will have nothing to do. It is hard to rally against a better life.

It is also important that people, no matter which political party they affiliate themselves with, stop demonizing conservatives. Conservatives have just as much a right to what they believe as Liberals do. Conservativism, like liberalism, is not confined to a single party. It is an ideology, not unlike the ideology behind the major political parties. It does not, however, describe every single member of either of the two major political parties in Congress.

Before you vilify, look up the word to find out what it actually means. You might find that you agree with it more than you think you do!
